So What is Epic?

Red Digital’s Epic-X Camera is a digital film equivalent, cinema camera. The Epic camera offers beyond HD resolutions, and like its older brother, the Red One camera, the Epic uses high bit depth and extremly high bit rates when recording to a raw codec, known as Redcode. The benefits of this high bit depth and bit rate are incredible versatility on a per frame basis. Task like color correction, composting and re-encoding are infinitely better then the pre-compressed formats that other HD Video cameras produce. The level of detail and image quality produced from the Epic camera’s 5k x35 sensor is revolutionary, and a first of its kind. The build quality and design of the Epic Camera is constructed to be highly modular and durable. Epic offers nearly Infinite configurations, and is upgradeable on a technological level.

The idea behind Epics construction is to make “Obsolescence obsolete”. If the technology that the Epic uses to produce its image becomes old, or in Epic’s case finally gets caught up to, you wont have to replace the entire camera. Instead, you can upgrade the part of the camera that produces and processes the image; the “Brain”. By offering a system that is completely modular, the upgrade process is as easy as changing a lens. Simply pull out the old brain and insert the new.

So what can Epic do?

To start, the Epic camera will shoot 5k 5120×2700, thats over 1500px more then the Red One camera @ 4k 2:1. This increase of resolution allows for greater amounts of detail to be captured. The benefit is a life like quality throughout the image. When projected to theatrical screen proportions the viewers experience is like looking through an open window straight into the storytellers world. There are no pixels or artifacts of any kind to remind the viewer its not real. If that is not enough the Epic’s high resolution will insure that your footage will retain forward compatibility for a long time.

The resolution of televisions and theaters continues to increase. It will soon out resolve the 720p, 1080i, 1080p and 2k HD and theatrical standards. Productions shot on Epic will retain the ability to be distributed far longer then any other camera currently available on the market. At the moment resolution has been set aside and the industry is focusing on Stereoscopic 3D, a feature Epic ships ready for, however once this has run its coarse the push for higher resolutions will once again resume. Once this happens footage shoot on today’s cameras will become obsolete. By shooting with Epic or the Red One you will avoid this inconvenience. A movie or commercial shot on Epic or Red One can be re-conformed a to a higher resolution.

The Epic camera also has an impressive sensitivity rateting, ranging from 200 iso to 12,800 iso. If you have ever shot with the 5d mk2 then you understand how beneficial this feature is.

Other features include: High speed shooting up to 225 fps, Multiple bit rates 30-250, 13.5 stops of dynamic range
NEW! Flute Color Science, Built in Time-lapse control, 3D ready, 5 pound camera body, Low power consumption and Wireless control.
